4. Suicide Forest in Japan
Aokigahara or the suicide forest in Japan is a dense forest which has been chosen by approx. 500 people as a site to commit suicide since 1950 till date. Japanese mythology connects this notorious forest of suicide with ghosts of the dead (yūrei). In the year 2010, 200 people attempted suicide in this forest and 54 of them succeeded in killing themselves. The police, journos and volunteers conduct an annual body search. The government has put up sign boards like ‘Please consult with the police before you decide to die’ and ‘Your life is a precious gift from your parents’. This terrifyingly creepy place is considered to be one of the scariest places on earth.
