#6 Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman fans were perplexed when it was announced that Steve Trevor of Chris Pine (who sacrificed himself at the end of the first movie) would be in the sequel set in the 1980s. Wonder Woman’s first trailer in 1984 confirmed that Diana Prince is indeed reuniting with her long-lost love, but it doesn’t explain his presence or why after several decades he looks exactly the same. It does, however, offer some subtle clues.

The two antagonists of the film are Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) and shady businessman Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal), a character who can control the mind in the lore of DC. Lord is shown in the trailer in what can be portrayed only as an evil lair, complete with a massive satellite dish.

He’s clearly interested in promoting the excess for which the 1980s were notorious (“Life is good, but it can be better,” he says in an infomercial), and Lord’s likely to use that satellite to spread his greed-is-good message, but could he use it to exploit Diana’s mind as well? Is that really Steve Trevor she’s embracing?

In another shot, Lord clutches some kind of artifact, which is presumably the link between him and Barbara Minerva, a.k.a Cheetah, an archeologist-turned-supervillain. In the comics, after engaging in a jungle rite, Wiig’s character achieves god-like abilities. Such powers are not on show in the teaser, but we see the costume Diana is likely to wear as she meets Cheetah — Gal Gadot is going to donate the armor of the Golden Eagle.
