#4 New Mutants

New Mutants was sold on the idea that Marvel’s characters would be a horror movie. Actor Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) seemed to be the perfect fit, telling Creative Screenwriting that he was “obsessed with Marvel Comics in the 1980s, long before there was a Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie.” His passion for the project made Fox want to take a chance on him, although the studio wasn’t impressed by what he turned in, according to reports.

Originally planned for a release in April 2018, The New Mutants was pushed back to February 2019 for ten entire months, with the official reason (via The Hollywood Reporter) being that the studio in some overseas territories wanted to avoid competing with Deadpool 2. It was later bumped into August 2019, fueling rumors that something else was going on than a simple conflict over scheduling. When it postponed again to April 2020, that certainly didn’t help.

According to Variety, Fox execs didn’t think the film was frightening enough, and even the word “extensive reshoots” doesn’t cover it — “at least 50%” of the original cut might end up being overhauled. And Anya Taylor-Joy (who is starring alongside Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and newcomer Blu Hunt) agreed that the shoots were needed; as she put it, “I think at the beginning we’re making the film we’re going to make.”
